Making of Fault

Brain storming the idea

Fault has adapted over time with the original idea being about the main character Adam hunting his last victim down to seek his revenge, he had already killed multiple victims so his last victim was his final piece to the puzzle. This whole idea came about from the song Another One Bites the Dust by Queen. And more specific the intro to that song. When I heard the beat and the lyrics. I imagined this vision in my head for an intro for a film using that song. And from that the story developed into what now is Fault.

Storyboarding the idea

The original idea was very different to what is now "Fault", it wasn't practical and did't make sense. So I kept the theme of the film but changed the story. I went location scouting with Kieran my sound guy/ Assistant Producer and took pictures of the locations and with them pictures created this story board as shown below.

Location Scouting

Kieran my assistant producer helped me scout a lot of different locations for my film. When it came to finding locations I knew I wanted to find somewhere that could show escapism and a forest type area was perfect we went to 2 different locations that were both used in my film first one being Ivybridge and the forest there that follows the river this location was perfect because it fit the idea of escapism and being in the unknown. Because of having a second character who appears throughout the film in a mischievous manner the forest plays a big part in hiding the character. I also wanted to try and make the location a character with having areas that triggered the main character Adam to have flashbacks to his previous crimes. The second location was a under path near Plymouth Sainsbury's reasons for this location for being perfect was because of it being so open. With the open space it would help show how alone the main character is and how spaced out he is because of his mentality.

Filming Day

When the day of filming came around I didn't plan for the weather to be bad, and when it rained when we were filming I had to adapt the story a little to fit with the weather. So because of the rain and the dark sky I wanted to use that to show the main characters emotions. When talking about a rainy dark day normally we would relate it to being miserable or depressing day. And because of that I wanted to link that with the character Adam. With his emotions and the hidden meaning of the film being mental health and depression being able to have the weather the way it was, gives it another clue to the hidden meaning of the film. Overall the shoot day went very well, all cast and crew were very productive and offered advice and ideas whilst shooting which for me was very helpful. Showing me different styles of shots that could work for my film. Filming at the underpass was the most difficult to film due to the change in light and the trying to get the right style of shots. Because of wanting to show Adam's journey throughout the film I wanted to make sure it didn't look like he just teleported to this area, so it was finding the right area in the location to make it look like this place was part of his journey, and luckily by the river there was a lot of greenery and bushes so we used that area to have a similar match to the Ivybridge location.  The day of shooting went extremely well being able to create the setting I wanted really helped make the shot come alive almost, with the main character Adam being in a place of the unknown.

Editing Process

For the editing process, it was a case of going through different stages to get my final edit, working closely with Kieran to keep updated on progress and sounds needed. The reason for editing in stages was because of being able to edit easier with less clutter. It started with putting the shots I wanted into the correct order with the help from my storyboard. Following that it was matching the audio recorded by Kieran for better sound.
